What is Mental Strength? PDF Print E-mail

To take your game ‘to the next level’ requires superior mental skills to complement your athletic abilities.  Elite performers in any sport have a unique combination of mental, technical, and physical skills.  Often, the X-factor in performance is the mental component.  I am sure you have seen two athletes who are equally talented in his or her sport, but when in pressure situations one athlete consistently ‘comes through in the clutch’ while the other predictably produces a poor result.  Athletes who are confident, calm, centered, and focused in those key pressure situations have Mental Strength.

Chris Evert1Chris Evert, winner of 18 Grand Slam titles, reflected on her Mental Strength capabilities, “I have always been known for my mental toughness and determination.  Those qualities have probably won me a lot more matches through the years, matches I easily could have lost.”

bobby_knight1Bobby Knight, one of the greatest college basketball coaches of all-time, summed up the importance of Mental Strength, “In winning, the mental is to the physical as four is to one.”

Elite Performance Coaching improves Mental Strength by giving athletes, teams, coaches, businesses, and organizations the education, tools, techniques, and strategies to gain the ‘mental edge.’ Based on Sport Psychology research and my 1-on-1 work with athletes of all levels, I have identified 7 Core Mental Strength Skills for Elite Performance.  They are Motivation, Confidence, Positive Mindset, Effective Thinking, Focus and Concentration, Energy Management, and Visualization.
